Breaking Bad Identification: Rebuilding How We Understand Intellectual Disabilities
The identification of Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD) has undergone a significant shift—moving away from rigid criteria toward more individualized and context-sensitive assessment practices. However, variations in guidance from the AAIDD, DSM-5-TR, ICD-10, IDEA, and state regulations often leave psychologists navigating a complex and sometimes conflicting landscape. While many professional standards now emphasize flexible IQ thresholds and functional, adaptive behavior assessments, outdated or inconsistent policies remain in place across several states. This skills-based workshop provides psychologists with practical tools to navigate these challenges. Participants will learn updated strategies for selecting and interpreting assessment measures, completing responsive evaluations, and writing strength-based and culturally responsive reports. Emphasis will be placed on implementing inclusive practices that support learning, community participation, and postsecondary success for individuals with IDD. Ray W. Christner, Psy.D., NCSP, ABPP |
